BRONZEVILLE — The Bee Library is adding two floors of space, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Tuesday.

The expansion will give the library a new digital youth media lab for teens and adult, a dedicated early childhood area and more meeting areas.

The changes will add 2,000 square feet to the current one-story library at 3647 S. State St.

Librarians are always excited when they get to update a library, Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon said.

“This is an opportunity for us to completely revitalize a great neighborhood library with significant investment from the Chicago Housing Authority and the city,” Bannon said. “Our libraries serve as community anchors in neighborhoods across the city, and the updates we will be able to make as part of this new investment are pretty exciting.”

Emanuel said public investments like the updates to the library and a new field house for Williams Park also announced Tuesday help build the foundations for communities like Bronzeville to grow and attract more investment.

The library opened in 1996 in the landmark building that was once the home of the Chicago Bee newspaper.
