TBT: When Blue Line Construction Forced Logan Businesses To Close In 1969

By Mina Bloom | April 27, 2017 12:39pm

LOGAN SQUARE — For #ThrowbackThursday, check out the 2700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue  during Blue Line construction circa 1969.

The old photo shows a stretch of Milwaukee that is now home to Hopewell Brewing Company and Unanimous Boxing Gym.

Here's what Logan Square Preservation has to say about the photo:

Blue Line construction on the 2700 block of Milwaukee Avenue, 1969. This block is currently home to Hopewell Brewing Company and Unanimous Boxing Gym. The two story building to their left was demolished was originally the Logan Bowl but it was demolished sometime after this photo was taken and the replacement will soon be home to The Dill Pickle Food Co-op.

The construction of the Blue Line to Jefferson Park in 1969-1970 was supposed to take three months because they were using an open excavation instead of tunneling (as the business community requested) but it actually took nine. During that time many long-time businesses were forced to close due to the substantial drop is traffic.
