GRAND BOULEVARD — Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd) said a gas station owner has agreed to address problems at the businesses after a quadruple shooting that left two dead in March.

Four men were shot, two fatally, at 1 a.m. March 10 at the GoLo gas station at 123 E. 51st St., prompting Dowell to demand changes at the business.

Dowell said the gas station has been a problem for a while, and the owner had allowed unauthorized cars to park and people to loiter.

After the drive-by shooting in which police found Jawon Carter and Lavelle Cox dead inside the gas station, Dowell asked the owner to no longer remain open 24 hours.

Employees at the station declined to comment Friday. The owner could not be reached.

The gas station now opens at 5 a.m. daily and closes at midnight and has security guards to stop loitering. The business has also posted no loitering signs, and the owner has agreed to start attending community policing meetings, Dowell said.

Dowell said several employees had to be let go after the owner agreed to conduct background checks.

She said owner has been cooperative and the measures so far have been helping prevent a situation that could again escalate to violence.

Dowell said she and the owner would meet again in three weeks to discuss whether the changes were continuing to work.
