LOGAN SQUARE — A daycare facility is joining the busy intersection of Logan Boulevard and Western Avenue anchored by big box retailers like Target and the City North 14 movie theater.

Construction is currently under way on a new outpost of The Learning Experience, a daycare chain taking over the industrial vacant lot at 2611 N. Western Ave.

The developer behind the project, Rob Horton of Red Cedar Partners LLC, said his team is aiming to finish construction by July and open the facility shortly thereafter.

The two-story, 10,900-square-foot facility, catering to children six-weeks to six-years old, will offer a fenced-in rooftop playground, which is mostly the result of limited space.

"Having an onsite playground was a requirement of The Leaning Experience so you have to make due with the space you have when your developing in an urban environment," Horton said in an email.

Inside, teachers will use technology-based learning tools like interactive white boards while focusing on the company's three principles: cognitive, physical and social, which they translate into, "learn, play and grow," according to the company's website.

Founded in 1980, The Learning Experience runs dozens of facilities across the country, including five in the suburbs and one in Sauganash, 4110 W. Peterson Ave.

The technical address of the Logan Square facility will be 2642 N. Jones St. because the front door and parking lot will face Jones Street, which was done to alleviate any safety concerns due to the busy intersection, according to Horton.

Horton and his project partners were granted a zoning change to construct the facility on the site, which had previously been zoned for manufacturing.
