CHICAGO — A 5-year-old boy has died after being hit by a truck Wednesday in McKinley Park, officials said.
At 8:08 a.m. Wednesday, a Chevy pickup truck driver was turning from 37th Street onto Ashland Avenue when he hit the boy and a 24-year-old man who were crossing the street, police said.
The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said, and the man had minor injuries but refused treatment.
Daniel Solis, 5, of the 4800 block of South Honore Street, was pronounced dead at 5:47 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
More than $2,400 has been raised to help the boy's family on GoFundMe.
"Daniel was an exuberant and joyful 'Busy Bee' in the kindergarten Yellow Room at Namaste Charter School," the fundraiser's organizer wrote on GoFundMe. "His teachers describe him as a shooting star who spread light wherever he went."
The driver, 41, stayed at the scene after the crash. Police were investigating.
