Dessert For Breakfast Breaks The Rules At These Lincoln Square Cafes

By Patty Wetli | February 24, 2017 9:40am

LINCOLN SQUARE — Time to throw out the window Mom's old rule "You have to eat all your vegetables before you can have dessert."

Some of the most decadent dishes on restaurant menus are actually listed under "breakfast."

Check out these sweet starts to the day in and around Lincoln Square.

• Churro French Toast, Le Cafe, 4655 N. Lincoln Ave.

Don't be fooled by Le Cafe's unassuming name, the Churro French Toast is a knockout. It tastes exactly like it sounds.

• Cinnamon Roll Griddlecakes, Cafe Selmarie, 4729 N. Lincoln Ave.

Think Cinnabon in pancake form.

• Chocolate Banana Pannenkoeken, Pannenkoeken Cafe, 4757 N. Western Ave.

Who cares if you can't pronounce it? It's the taste that counts. This crepe-like Dutch pancake is covered in bananas, drizzled in chocolate and then topped with hazelnut crunch, whipped cream and powdered sugar.

So this happened this morning. #pannenkoeken #vegetarian #breakfast #sweet #nutella #banana

• Candy Apple French Toast, Over Easy, 4943 N. Damen Ave.

At Over Easy, cooks treat brioche french toast like a blank canvas, and they paint it with salted caramel, cinnamon pastry cream, candied cashews and whipped cream. Plus apples, so it's totally healthy.

• Cannoli French Toast, Marmalade, 1969 W. Montrose Ave.

This dish is listed as "vegetarian." Because there's no meat in chocolate or espresso cream.

• S'mores French Toast, Savanna, 4111 N. Lincoln Ave.

Skip the campfire and head to this North Center joint instead. Bring along pals and order up helpings of the Red Velvet Pancakes and Pound Cake French Toast while you're at it.

• Lemon Meringue Pancakes, Orange, 2011 W. Roscoe St.

Orange swaps out pie crust for a pancake, and tops it with lemon curd and a torched homemade marshmallow.

• Bread Pudding French Toast, Bryn Mawr Breakfast Club, 3401 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.

Owner/chef Manny Mejia works magic at this North Park cafe. The bread pudding is a showstopper but the Blackberry and Kiwi French Toast should not be overlooked. Pro tip: Get an order of Cinnamon Hotcakes on the side.
