HYDE PARK — It will be easier this year for Kenwood Academy students to check out colleges thanks to a donation from Nando’s Peri-Peri.

The new South African restaurant, 1447 E. 53rd St., raised $11,020 for the high school by donating all of its opening-day sales from Jan. 14.

Kenwood Principal Gregory Jones said the donation is huge for the school.

“With a portion of the donation, we anticipate an increase in student registration for the spring break tour to New York,” Jones said. “As a matter of fact, we have added three highly selective upstate colleges to the tour.”

He said the school will use the money to expose students to more selective schools and expand the number of college tours this year.

Nando’s CEO Burton Heiss said in an announcement of the donation that he is proud to support the tradition of college tours at the school.

“It’s all about being good neighbors, and Nando’s looks forward to becoming an integral part of the South Side,” Heiss said.

The Hyde Park restaurant is the sixth location in Chicago.
