PILSEN — To avoid the expected bitter cold this week, the 25th Ward office has postponed the annual Pilsen tree lighting ceremony to next week.

The tree lighting has been rescheduled to 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Plaza Tenochtitlán, located at South Loomis Street and South Blue Island Avenue in Pilsen. The ceremony was originally slated to take place Thursday night.

Thursday will see temperatures in the single digits, though it might feel as cold as minus 5 or minus-15 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The "bitter" cold will put people at risk of frostbite, AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines said.

The Orozco Community Academy mariachi band, a Jungman Elementary choir and a local dance group are slated to perform at the tree lighting next week. Area restaurants also donated baked goods, hot chocolate and coffee for parents and kids to enjoy in the plaza.

The tree lighting is hosted by the Eighteenth Street Development Corporation and Ald. Danny Solis (25th).

The event is also sponsored by Demitasse Cafe, Nuevo Leon Bakery, Casa de Pueblo, Green Curtain Events, McDonald's, Don Churro, Cafe Jumping Bean, Del Campo Tacos and Fig Catering.
