MAYFAIR — Fans of Red Ribbon didn't let a little snow get between them and their sweets during Saturday's grand opening of the highly anticipated Filipino bakery.

Customers started lining up at 5 a.m. for the shop's 7 a.m. ribbon cutting inside Seafood City, 5033 N. Elston Ave., with the first 100 receiving a free bundle pack of Red Ribbon's best selling pastries, according to company reports posted on Facebook.

The Chicago location is not only Red Ribbon's first in Illinois but the entire Midwest.

Red Ribbon now joins other Filipino favorites, including Grill City and Crispy Town, inside the wildly popular Seafood City complex that opened in September, replacing a shuttered Kmart.

The long awaited Jollibee is expected to open by the end of the year, according to Eater Chicago.

Red Ribbon's most-loved items include its empanadas, Mango Supreme Cake, Butter Mamon (a single-serving sponge cake) and Ube Overload Cake.

For those unfamiliar with ube, which is poised to become the "next big thing" in pastry, the purple yam is common in the Philippines and other Asian countries. Its intensely bright purple hue is often mistakenly attributed to food dye, but the color is natural.

Red Ribbon will be open 7 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.
