CHICAGO — Three men have been arrested after a standoff with a SWAT team in South Chicago and after the group allegedly shot at a top police commander in the area, officials said.

It is the third time police have been fired at since Sunday, Chicago Police said.

A police supervisor was driving an unmarked police car around 10:20 p.m. Thursday in the 8800 block of South Saginaw Avenue when at least one person fired shots at him, police said.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson later identified the target as South Chicago district commander Noel Sanchez.

"We've had police officers attacked three times this week. By the grace of God, they are here to tell the story. That's ridiculous. They come to their jobs as if they are the target."

The commander then saw the shooter run into a house, and a SWAT team was called to the block, police said.

About 3:30 a.m., three men were arrested by police without further incident, police said. Two other people are being questioned about their involvement in the standoff, police said.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Police also were fired on Monday by two men whom police saw illegally selling guns, according to the Police Department. On Sunday, officers shot and killed a man who they said fired at them after he shot a pregnant 24-year-old.
