CHICAGO — A man who police said shot a 24-year-old pregnant woman was fatally shot by officers in West Garfield Park Sunday night, according to the police department.

Officers at 11:28 p.m. Sunday responded to a call of a domestic battery in the 4600 block of West Adams Street and found that the man involved had fled to Kenton Avenue. When officers found him on Kenton, he fired a shot in their direction, police said in a statement.

Police set up a perimeter in the area and later found the man in a gangway, where he fired again at police, the department said. Officers returned fire and struck the man, police said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.

While investigating the incident, officers found that a 24-year-old pregnant woman had been shot in the 4600 block of West Adams, police said. She was shot in her abdomen and was taken to a local hospital in serious condition, police said.

The police-involved shooting is being investigated by IPRA. Any officer who fired his or her gun will be placed on desk duty for 30 days pending the investigation, police said.

The shooting was the fourth time in 10 days that police shot and killed someone.

A man was shot and killed by police Friday in Homan Square. Officers fatally shot Kajuan Raye, 19, Wednesday in West Englewood, and 26-year-old Darius Jones was shot and killed by officers Nov. 18 in West Englewood.
