COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Two men have been charged with shooting at police during an illegal gun sale in West Lawn early Monday.

No one was hurt in the attack, which began about 9:25 a.m. in the 6100 block of South Kolmar Avenue.

According to police and prosecutors, a 25-year-old man had arranged to buy three guns from Jose Guzman, 21, for a total of $1,500. The weapons included a .380 caliber handgun, a 9mm handgun and a revolver.

Chicago Police officers and FBI agents were monitoring the exchange as part of an ongoing investigation into illegal gun sales, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Wednesday.

The 25-year-old civilian drove to Kolmar Avenue, where he gave Guzman cash, police and prosecutors said.

The civilian waited in his car as Guzman went to get the guns, according to prosecutors. That's when Guzman's accomplice, 21-year-old Jose Gurumendi, approached through a gangway and fired three shots toward the civilian, Scaduto said.

Guzman and Gurumendi then fled in a waiting car, according to prosecutors.

Police tried to box in the vehicle on 61st Street, where one of the officers pulled his gun and announced his office, Scaduto said. The car continued to speed away, and police gave chase.

At one point, prosecutors said, Guzman reached his arm out of the car and fired several shots toward a Chicago Police sergeant who'd been following the getaway vehicle.

Guzman and Gurumendi eventually got out of the car and fled on foot, prosecutors said. Police found Guzman hiding near a pool about 10 a.m., court records show.

Gurumendi, meanwhile, is accused of offering a witness $10 not to call the police. According to an arrest report, police found Gurumendi in the 6800 block of South Kenneth Avenue about 10:30 a.m.

Guzman, of the 5600 block of South Kostner Avenue, and Gurumendi, of the 5500 block of South Kenneth Avenue, are charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan on Wednesday ordered each man held in lieu of $400,000 bail.
