PILSEN — With a nighttime skeleton processional and sidewalk altar displays known as ofrendas, Pilsen residents will once again this week honor the memory of loved ones who have passed away.

Arts group ElevArte will celebrate Dia De Los Muertos with the 37th annual Muertos de la Risa processional Wednesday night in Pilsen.

Face painting and musical performances begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Dvorak Park. At 6 p.m., participants in Day of the Dead-inspired costumes can join in on the community processional through Pilsen with large puppets and decorated hand-pushed carts.

The events are free and open to the public.

The National Museum of Mexican Art's 30th annual exhibit "Dia De Los Muertos: Journey of the Soul" features work from more than 50 artists and runs through Dec. 11.

Journey of the Soul showcases the indigenous roots and rituals involved in the spiritual tradition, according to the museum's website.

While the museum is normally open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, on Tuesday, Nov. 1 it will be open late until 8 p.m.

Day of the Dead, the annual Mexican tradition that honors the deceased, begins the day after Halloween and ends Wednesday. The days coincide with the Catholic holidays All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, but the holiday was born from ancient Aztec traditions.
