LITTLE VILLAGE — The correctional officers and inmates injured in a massive brawl at Cook County Jail this week have been released from area hospitals, according to the sheriff's office.

All eight county inmates injured in the brawl have returned to the jail, 2700 S. California Ave., Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said in a statement.

At about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, paramedics were called to the jail's Division 9, a maximum security facility, after a fight broke out in a common area of the wing, officials said.

A fight between inmates spiraled into a brawl, with inmates flinging food trays at each other across the common area of the jail, according to video released by the sheriff.

Eight detainees and three correctional officers were taken to area hospital following the fight, the sheriff said. The injuries, including some puncture wounds, were non-life threatening, the sheriff said, and all those brought to hospitals have since been released.

Four of the eight detainees injured in the fight are being held at the county jail on murder charges. Another is being held for attempted murder, one for home invasion with a gun and one for residential burglary, according to the sheriff.

The Cook County Sheriff's office is investigating the source of the fights and weapons used in the altercations.
