MCKINLEY PARK — Imagine a Chicago without running water, with little food and — oh, yeah — zombies.

How long would you survive? One day? Maybe two, if you're lucky?

Nick Conrad, an environmentalist and survivalist, will visit McKinley Park Library from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 5 to teach a free “Zombie Survival Training” class on everything you need to know about surviving a world-shattering disaster.

“We all know zombies are not real,” said Conrad, 35. “The zombie class itself is a disaster survival class at its core.”

An Eagle Scout from San Antonio, Texas, Conrad developed the class after realizing how little people know about outdoor survival and disaster preparation.

“Most people don’t know where to go, what to do, what they need to gather. Unfortunately, when a disaster happens it’s already too late. It’s the preparation that comes before,” Conrad said. "It's like second nature to me."

Conrad teach Zombie Survival Training students methods of preserving food and water, what to do in the aftermath of an emergency and how to make hunting and defense weapons like a crossbow — or baseball bat enhanced with a circular saw blade.

“Firearms aren’t the best weapons in a disaster,” Conrad said. “They’re heavy. It’s really hard to make your own ammunition.”

Registration is required for the class. Space is limited. Sign up at the library’s circulation desk or call 312-747-6082.
