UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — Chicago Police are investigating a shooting that damaged a sprinkler and waste line inside of a University Commons garage last week.

Between 10:30 and 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, three men entered University Commons residential complex in the 1000 block of West 15th Street looking for an unknown person, Chicago Police said.

The men proceeded to enter the complex's Building 2 and go to the building's second floor, according an email sent to University Commons residents by April Daly, a Draper and Kramer Condominium Management Services property manager who manages the complex.

The suspects proceeded to pound on unit doors screaming for a person they wanted to come out, Daly wrote. When the person they were looking for was not found, they exited the lower garage via a stairwell and entered a newer white Nissan Maxima.

On their way out of the garage, one of the men pointed a gun out the back window of the car and shot holes in the sprinkler line and a cast iron waste line, Daly said.

The offenders then fled the scene in the white sedan, according to police and Daly. No one was injured.

Chicago Police said it does not appear the suspect was shooting at a person, only the pipes. The incident was later reported to police, a spokesperson for the department confirmed.

Daly said it is believed the three men were targeting a specific unit on the second floor and that the shooting was not a random act of violence.

"The Board and Management are working closely with CPD and CPD has promised extra patrols on the property for the next week," she wrote. "We are also working with legal counsel on further action in which the Association can take in this matter."

Area Central detectives are investigating the shooting, police said Sunday.

In an effort to address questions about the shooting, University Commons management and police will host a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 Near West Police station, 1412 S. Blue Island Ave.
