CHICAGO — As part of its ongoing investigation into the "pattern and practice" of the Chicago Police Department, officials from the U.S. Department of Justice will hold a public forum on the Near West Side later this month.

The gathering will be the fifth such event held since last December, when U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced the federal probe. The investigation was triggered in the aftermath of a tape showing an officer shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014.

The Justice Department is stepping in to "to determine whether there are systemic violations of the Constitution or federal law" by police, including "racial, ethnic and other disparities in its use of force, as well as police accountability systems..., how the police department responds to citizen complaints, and how it handles officer discipline," according to a written statement.

At the previous open forum, held in Englewood this June, tension boiled over as many residents called into question the integrity of the investigation.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 at Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Jackson Blvd.
