GRAND BOULEVARD — Rylon’s Smokehouse and Batter and Berries owner Derek Rylon is downplaying rumors of a move to Bronzeville as his new barbecue restaurant opens Oct. 12 in the South Loop.

There was a lot of excitement last week when developers announced Batter and Berries would be a tenant in the renovated Rosenwald Court Apartments, but Rylon said Friday the cart has gotten in front of the horse.

Rylon said he’s in talks about opening a restaurant in the Rosenwald, 4600 S. Michigan Ave., but has not committed yet.

“It’s nothing in stone, it’s just been talked about,” Rylon said.

He said it could happen, but it would more likely be a barbecue restaurant similar to Rylon’s Smokehouse, which is opening on Oct. 12 in the South Loop at 67 E. Cermak Road.

Rylon said he’s still looking into whether Bronzeville would be worth the financial risk for him.

“I’m just waiting for everything to make sense,” Rylon said.

He said he would likely make a decision in the next month.

While Rylon’s hesitancy might disappoint many on the south lakefront that have been begging for him to open a second location of his popular Lincoln Park brunch spot Batter and Berries in Hyde Park, he will be getting a little closer to the neighborhood soon.

Derek Rylon said he's considering opening a barbecue restaurant in Bronzeville, but has no plans to expand his popular brunch spot, Batter and Berries.

Rylon’s Smokehouse announced Friday it will open on Oct. 12 and on Thursday posted on Facebook a first glimpse at the menu for the barbecue and whiskey restaurant.

The menu includes a wonderland of smoked and barbecued meats, including St. Louis-style ribs, smoked chicken wings and a bevvy of smoked links, including alligator, lamb, seafood and hot links.

Kansas City- and St. Louis-style barbecue both are on the menu and Rylon has said he’s making everything in-house and will grill much of the meat before smoking it so it’s smoky but still has a meaty flavor.

Rylon's Smokehouse released its menu full of smoked meats and barbecue on Thursday.
