CHICAGO — Activists next month will honor Laquan McDonald, who was shot and killed by a Chicago Police officer, on the second anniversary of his death.
McDonald was 17 when he was fatally shot 16 times by Officer Jason Van Dyke on Oct. 20, 2014. It wasn't until a year after McDonald's death that video of the shooting was released, sparking protests throughout the city for weeks.
Van Dyke has been charged with murder in the teen's death.

This Oct. 20, activists will meet in front of Chicago Police Headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Ave., to honor McDonald's life and host a day of action, according to a Facebook event post. They will then attend a Chicago Police Board hearing and demand the firing of officers who they say helped cover up McDonald's death.
Activist William Calloway, who played a role in the release of the McDonald video, is one of the organizers of the anniversary observation.
