LAKEVIEW — It's so hard to say goodbye.

Neighborhood favorites like Spritz Burger, Tutto Fresco Trattoria and In-On Thai have closed shop to make way for a mixed-use development along Broadway and Sheridan.

And while it can be difficult letting go, it's also a lot of fun to see stuff get wrecked.

Demolition began in late July for the buildings at 3817-45 N. Broadway, and Spritz is the first to go.

The multi-building complex is getting razed to make way for a mixed-use development slated to cost more than $10 million. The seven-story structure will include 125 residential units, 129 parking spots, office space and retail.

A key part of the project is doing everything possible to protect the historic ceramic eagles in the building currently home to Starbucks.

The Chicago Landmark Commission is still working with developer Dave Gassman to make sure the 1911 sculptures are preserved, Ald. James Cappleman (46th) said Tuesday.

In the meantime, demolition permits are in for the surrounding structures, so expect a few more weeks of wreckage ahead.
