NORTH CENTER — The FBI said Monday they have a man in custody who robbed as many as four banks in North Center.

Greg Zuercher, 37, is now charged with robbing one bank and is suspected in four more, FBI officials said.

According to the criminal complaint filed by the FBI in the case, Zuercher, who was dubbed by the FBI after a June 8, 2016, robbery as the "North Center Bandit," would hand a bank employee an envelope saying "Give me the money or I start hurting people. I have a weapon."

He ordered the teller to give him bills from his top drawer, and to return the envelope, which the teller dropped on the ground, according to the complaint.

After getting $1,163, he turned around and walked out of the bank, the FBI said.

The robbery matched four other bank robberies in the area. The FBI offered a $5,000 reward for his capture — leading to about 13 tips from the public.

When police showed a photo lineup to the teller — including Zuercher's driver's licenses photo — the teller picked him out, saying "This is him. This is really accurate," according to the criminal complaint.

Tellers from the other heists also identified Zuercher as the bandit, the FBI said.

Zuercher also took more than $1,100 from a Chase Bank branch on June 8 in Jefferson Park, according to the complaint.

Zuercher was arrested by the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force consisting of the Chicago Police Department, the FBI and the Cook County's Sheriff's Police.
