STREETERVILLE — Sunday's storms didn't just shut down the Blue Line

They also brought "abundant lightning" that touched down all over the city, including near Navy Pier's new Ferris wheel.

Libby Felton of Lakeview was on her way to Sunday night's Coldplay show at Soldier Field when she captured the bolt on her iPhone.

"I took about 20 shots, just driving along," Felton said. "I got two separate lightning bolts and didn’t even realize that one had hit the Ferris wheel until I pulled it up close."

Last week's hot and humid weather brought intense storms over the weekend, with 45-mph winds and scattered hail.

"Lightning was abundant given the very unstable atmosphere," the National Weather Service said, and storms ripped off roofs in Wicker Park, tore apart a brick Pilsen building, and briefly shut down a Blue Line station on the Near West Side.

Felton's photo shows lightning striking near Navy Pier's new Ferris wheel, which debuted Memorial Day Weekend. A spokeswoman for the pier confirmed lightning did not strike the actual wheel Sunday night.
