PILSEN — Two cars parked on a street were destroyed by falling bricks after a violent storm tore apart a Pilsen building Sunday night.

After the storm died down, Victorino Herrera said he went to check on his gold Jeep Grand Cherokee parked in the 1900 block of South Throop Street, only to find it was one of two vehicles destroyed. The cars were damaged when the top of a 3-1/2 story building at 1922 S. Throop St. toppled onto the street below, leaving massive chunks of bricks and other building debris.

"I found it last night. I just [went] to my children, 'We have no more car,' " Herrera said.

Herrera lives on the block with his family and was waiting to talk the building's owner Monday morning.

City building inspectors worked quickly to secure the building, and scaffolding was erected at the site Monday. Chicago Police closed a block-long stretch on South Throop Street Monday to keep onlookers away from the street, which was scattered with shattered glass and bricks.

A nearby streetlight was also damaged by the storm.

Further information was not immediately available.
