CHICAGO — An 11-year-old boy shot Monday initially thought he was hit by an errant firework while celebrating the Fourth of July in Heart of Chicago, according to police.

The boy was standing on a porch in the 2000 block of South Western Avenue at 9 p.m. Monday when he suffered a wound to his right arm that he and his family believed was from a firework set off nearby, police said.

It wasn't until the boy was brought to St. Anthony Hospital that it was determined to be a gunshot wound, police said. The boy is listed in good condition at St. Anthony.

No arrests have been made, police said.
