LOGAN SQUARE — Brentano Math and Science Academy in Logan Square tested positive for lead in its water, according to Chicago Public Schools.

The principal of the school, Seth Lavin, addressed the situation during a tour of the school with reporters Thursday morning, adding that his own child attends.

The school is one of 14 to test positive for lead since the district began testing its most vulnerable schools this year.

Lavin said two water sources tested positive, a drinking fountain and a hand washing sink in the school's kitchen.

The water fountain, on the first test, contained 16 parts per million of lead, which is just slightly over the threshold of 15 parts per million to be considered dangerous, according to Lavin.

On the next three tests of the same fountain, the lead level was below the threshold, the principal said.

Still, the school district took that fountain out of service until it is fixed or will be replaced.

The hand washing sink in the kitchen had a higher level of lead than the water fountain, the principal said, but that water would never have been in contact with children or food.

"Our school is operating as normal except those two things," Lavin said.

The school, 2723 N. Fairfield Ave., informed parents of the lead Monday and held a meeting to discuss the findings Tuesday.

As of Wednesday, roughly one in every five schools tested district-wide had elevated levels of lead in at least one water source.

Test results haven't come back for hundreds more schools yet.

So far, 65 schools have received results of lead testing, which has included 15,853 samples of water sources as of June 7. Of the 3,044 samples with results so far, 70 have shown actionable levels of lead, roughly 2 percent.

Other schools that have tested positive for lead include Blaine Elementary, Beasley Elementary, Beidler Elementary; Budlong Elementary; Harvard Elementary; Esmond Elementary; Fernwood Elementary; Lasalle II Language Academy; Josephine Locke Elementary; Peirce School Of International Studies; Perez Elementary and Tanner Elementary.
