Chicago Cubs Break Record ... For World's Largest Flip Cup Game

WRIGLEY FIELD — The red-hot Chicago Cubs are a favorite to win the World Series this fall, but they already raised another flag Friday: for the World's Largest Flip Cup game.

After drubbing the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-0, the North Siders brought down 200 fans to Center Field for a record-setting gathering of people competitively drinking and flipping plastic cups in a row. Led by team captains Jason Hammel and David Ross, the event raised $40,000 for charity.

The cups were filled with water, but fans still enjoyed themselves as they shared laughs and high-fives throughout the contest. Officials from RecordSetter.com wore yellow jackets, tallied the contestants, and granted the event world record status.

"It's amazing to be at Wrigley and be on the field," contestant Tiffany Stroud said.

The Cubs partnered with Hefty for the event, which asked fans to sign up on a website. The first 200 fans who signed up got a free ticket to Friday's game and an opportunity to be in the unprecedented postgame contest.

Contestants were split into teams alphabetically, with Ross's Blue Team eventually easing to victory. Hammel, a pitcher who is set to start Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, jokingly teased about the size of the tables a la "Happy Gilmore."

"Are those tables regulation-size or what?" he pondered.

Ross will donate the winning team's $30,000 prize to foundations led by his Cubs teammates Jon Lester and Anthony Rizzo, the Cubs said. Hammel will donate his $10,000 share to the Cubs' Diamond Project, which builds baseball fields in disadvantaged areas.

The Cubs have the best record in baseball and improved to 38-15 on the season with Friday's win.
