PILSEN — Divvy plans to add more than 1,000 new bikes as part of a major expansion focused on Chicago's South and West sides, the mayor's office announced Friday.

Divvy ridership is up 48 percent this year and the expansion will help the program reach more Chicago neighborhoods. A total of 1,077 new bikes will be rolled out this year and an additional 85 bike stations will be installed in Chicago, pushing the boundaries to serve new neighborhoods on the South, West and North sides of the city, a Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman said Friday afternoon.

Specific locations for the new stations will be announced soon, a spokesman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.

Divvy workers are now assembling and road testing the new bikes at the company's Pilsen warehouse.

“CDOT is very excited to be working with Divvy to expand access to what it is already the largest bike share system in North America,” CDOT First Deputy Commission Randy Conner said. “The continued growth of Divvy demonstrates our commitment to improving transportation options and quality of life in neighborhoods throughout Chicago.”

Since its launch, more than 750,000 Chicagoans and visitors have used the bike sharing service, according to city data.

Majority of the city's most used stations are Downtown and in surrounding areas, according to an October DNAinfo study.
