Designated a National Historic Landmark, the home was designed by architectural firm Holabird and Root in 1888. The firm designed a number of Chicago landmarks, including the Marquette building, Chicago Board of Trade, City Hall, Soldier Field, University Club of Chicago and the Palmer House Hotel.
