ANDERSONVILLE — While the structure of the restaurant remains the same, Kanela Breakfast Club debuted a completely renovated interior during its ribbon cutting and soft opening event Thursday.

The owners of the breakfast and lunch spot made some cosmetic upgrades including a new paint job, redone floors, new shelving and lighting to infuse some of the company's signature style into the former Summerdale space, at 5413 N. Clark St., said co-owner Peter Lardakis.

"We gave it our Kanela-theme. All our restaurants have this kind of warm, brown, cinnamon feel," said Lardakis. Kanela is Greek for "cinnamon."

The space features seating for 100, including booth and table seating along with a diner-style counter, according to a press release.

Kanela, brings "a local, organic approach to a Greek-infused American breakfast and lunch," according to the restaurant's website. Everything served in the restaurant is cooked from scratch using "local organic ingredients whenever possible," and many items feature cinnamon, the website says.

The "sweet and savory" menu, which was created by Executive Chef Don Penza, is similar to the menus at other Kanela locations in Lakeview, Old Town, Wicker Park and Streeterville.

Penza is a graduate of The International Culinary School at the Illinois Institute of Art and former Executive Chef for Municipal Bar and Dining Company. He also opened two rooftop venues in Wrigleyville, the release said.

The company also recently changed brewers to Bow Truss Coffee Roasters, which is now featured in its lattes, cold brews, Greek Frappe, French Press, cortado and macchiato, the release said.
