UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — Alicia Garza, one the co-founders of Black Lives Matter, is scheduled to speak on the UIC campus next month.
Garza will speak at the university's Student Center East Illinois Room B, 750 S. Halsted St., at 5 p.m. April 5.
Admission to the event is free and open to the public.
Garza, who is currently the special projects director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, previously served as executive director of People Organized to Win Employment Rights.
Her writing has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, The Nation, The Feminist Wire, and Truthout.org among others.
Many Black Lives Matter protesters attended a planned rally for Donald Trump at the UIC Pavilion earlier this month. But Trump canceled the rally without appearing, citing safety concerns.
After the elections in which members of Black Lives Matter, Assata's Daughters, along with other activists, took credit for helping defeat Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez, Garza congratulated them via her Twitter account.
