NEAR WEST SIDE — Friends, neighbors and family members gathered to reflect Wednesday at the site where a 21-year-old woman was shot to death earlier that morning.

Just after midnight, police said, the woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a car in the 2100 block of the West Maypole Avenue when someone shot at her from the street and hit her in her back. The woman was brought to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Neighbors identified the woman as Daysha Wright, saying she lived on the same block where she was shot — what residents call the "super block" of the West Haven Apartments, formerly known as the Henry Horner Homes.

Jack Wright, who said he was Daysha's cousin, joined a small group that came to pay their respects Monday morning.

"She was just a really nice girl," Jack Wright said. "Always had a smile on her face. Always."

The blue sedan where Daysha Wright was shot remained parked on the side of the street the next day. A bullet hole tore through the back bumper, and blood was visible in the front passenger seat.

Neighbors were alarmed that the violence had reached their block, which sits between a community center and a small playground.

"There have been issues with crowding around here, but this kind of thing doesn't happen," said Sherita Butler, who lives on the block and works at the community center. "We don't do murder in this neighborhood."

"It's just senseless — you've got kids playing around here 10 feet away from where it happened," she continued. "I don't want to have to tell my children about this now. They understand death, but not when it's happening right in front of them."

No one is in custody, police said.
