CHICAGO — The Blackhawks are by far Illinois' most popular sports team, at least when it comes to license plate preference.

According to the Illinois Secretary of State's office, the Hawks have the No. 1 specialty license plate in the state, with 18,578 plates bought as of Friday.

The Blackhawks — who have a bright red plate that features the team logo — beat out all other city sports teams, by a huge margin.

The White Sox are next, with 9,988 plates bought. That figure is perhaps surprisingly more than the Bears (7,041), Cubs (5,513) and Bulls (2,683).

The Blackhawks' plates debuted in 2010, after the team won the Stanley Cup, while the other four Chicago pro sports teams' plates were released in 2011.

“The funds generated from the professional sports teams license plates benefit children by going to public education, and it is a good way for sports fans to express their team loyalty,” Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White said in an email.

The cost to buy a sports team plate is $141, with an annual renewal cost of $128.
