CHICAGO — Saying it needs more time to consider candidates, the Chicago Police Board said it wont meet its self-imposed deadline to list the three finalists for the city's next superintendent of police.

The board originally said it would name three finalists for Chicago's top cop position at the end of February. Lori Lightfoot, the Police Board president, said the deadline has come and gone because more time is needed to vet the candidates.

"We believe that getting the best candidates to lead the Chicago Police Department at this moment in time is of the utmost importance," Lightfoot said in a statement. "... the board's diligence process continues and we will make our recommendations as soon as possible."

The Chicago Police Board has been leading the charge to find a new superintendent since Garry McCarthy was fired by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in December.

Applications for the position were accepted through Jan. 15, and the board said it would then make a list of three finalists. Emanuel would then have his pick of the final three candidates, according to the Police Board's website.

Throughout that time, the board has been holding community meetings to seek input on the job search from community members. Some of those meetings were tense and packed by protesters seeking more accountability in the process.

The board has not made the names of candidates public, saying it would only list publicly the three finalists.

One candidate has come out publicly, however. Former Baltimore officer and Black Lives Matter activist Michael Wood said he applied for the job.
