LITTLE VILLAGE — A man died after jumping into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal on the Southwest Side in an attempt to flee from police Friday night, authorities said.
Around 11:30 p.m., officers spotted a van running a stop sign in the 4100 block of South Cicero Avenue, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.
When the officers tried to pull the van over, it sped off, Estrada said. Eventually it came to a stop and three men jumped out, fleeing in different directions.
One of the men ran down the embankment of the Cicero Avenue bridge and jumped into the water, Estrada said.
Chicago Fire Department divers pulled the man from the water and sent him to Loyola Hospital in critical condition, officials said.
