IRVING PARK — Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon will meet with community members later this month to discuss the future of the Independence branch.

The public forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 22 at the Disney II Magnet Lawndale campus, 3900 N. Lawndale Ave.

The library, 3548 W. Irving Park Road, suffered collateral damage in a fire that destroyed an adjacent building and has been closed since Oct. 30, 2015.

After the fire, neighbors and elected officials renewed calls for a 21st century permanent home for the Independence branch, which has been shuttled from one temporary rented location to another since it was founded in 1889.

Library officials are expected to provide an update on whether the branch will reopen — short- or long-term — at the storefront on Irving Park Road, and if so, how long it will take to rehabilitate the space and what services will be available in the interim.
