LINCOLN PARK — After just five months of business, the owner of The Mexican, Edgar Castaneda, decided to ditch the more traditional concept and start fresh with a casual spot that more closely aligns with the restaurant he's known for, Taco Joint.

BBQ Joint, 1967 N. Halsted St., which blends barbecue with Mexican cuisine, has replaced The Mexican and is now officially open as of Monday.

"More than anything, it was based on feedback," Castaneda said of the rebranding decision.

Modeled after a Mexican diner, or Fonda, The Mexican offered traditional dinner entrees (with prices to match) at low tables.

But it didn't take Castaneda long to realize that customers were looking for something more casual and more reminiscent of his popular eatery Taco Joint, which is right next door.

Castaneda  used the feedback and came up with BBQ Joint, which would capitalize on the strengths of Taco Joint with a mix-and-match menu and a casual vibe.

"It's confusing to some guests who walk in, but everyone's been really receptive to the menu," he said.

Some of the dishes include a barbecue rice bowl, smoked brisket tacos, mole pulled-pork sliders, Mexican roadside chicken and pozole grits.

Castaneda brought in a rotisserie to brine, smoke and slow-cook meat.

There are margaritas, mezcalitas, bourbon teas, craft beer, Mexican brews and more to drink.

BBQ Joint is open Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m. The team said it plans to launch lunch service soon.
