PILSEN — The woman who led efforts to produce many Dia de Los Muertos processions, Pozolada fiestas and numerous arts programs in Pilsen is stepping down.

Giselle Mercier, executive director of ElevArte Community Studio, is leaving the post after seven years at the helm of the arts organization. She plans to move back to Panama, her birthplace, where she will continue her work with youth development and supporting opportunities in the arts.

During her time at ElevArte, Mercier led an all-woman staff and a talented group of teaching artists, said Thelma Uranga, the group's communications coordinator. The organization implemented new standards of excellence and grew the organization's visibility in the field of arts education during her tenure, she said.

Mercier landed her first career opportunity in Pilsen 28 years ago and the neighborhood welcomed her back to lead ElevArte seven years ago.

"I am infinitely grateful to all my colleagues in the field of arts education, it's been a great and joyful experience," she said.

ElevArte is now searching for a new executive director and the group hopes to name a new leader in the spring.

Mercier said the change in leadership at ElevArte is "a positive and necessary change."

"The organization is at a pinnacle of growth and in order to maintain its course, a fresh perspective and out-of-the box thinker is needed," she said.

Friends and Pilsen residents are invited to bid Mercier farewell at a fundraiser in February. ElevArte will hold a "beer voyage" sendoff party and fundraiser from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Lagunitas Brewing Company, 2607 W. 17th St. in North Lawndale. Tickets are $20 and can be bought online.

ElevArte, formerly known as Pros Arts Studio, is a social impact organization that uses the arts as a portal for creative youth development. The organization operates in-school residencies, out-of-school programs and community celebrations, including the annual Muertos de la Risa processional, Pozalada and We are Hip Hop youth festivals.
