UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — Fosco Park's indoor pool isn't only welcoming eager swimmers this season — it's home to cockroaches, too.

One of Park District's newest indoor pools, swim parents are concerned that a cockroach infestation is taking over the Fosco Park pool locker rooms.

Emily Xu, whose four children participate in swim classes and the swim team at Fosco Park, said she routinely sees cockroaches and other bugs in the pool's locker room. The problem has been ongoing for about a year, she said.

"There was a time they [were] trying to clean the closet, to kill the bugs in there, they sprayed something," Xu said. "But after they did that, a few days later, we told [management] there is still bugs in there."

Last week, her son found a dead bug in the water after class, she said.

"I wasn't so surprised that there was a dead bug in there, because in the locker room we've been seeing them for a while."

Other parents told Fox32 Chicago that they see cockroaches coming out of the walls in the field house on a daily basis.

Chicago Park District leaders are aware of Fosco Park's pest problem, spokeswoman Jessica Maxey-Faulkner said Thursday. Over the last few weeks, a pest control company has applied multiple treatments in the locker room area.

Pest control crews fogged around the pool Thursday. While the entire building was not closed, Maxey-Faulkner said the treatment was confined to the pool area and locker rooms, and precautionary measures were taken to ensure young children who attend daycare at Fosco Park were not affected.

"We expect this issue to be resolved soon," she said.

Xu said she suspects people bring food into the building, although she hasn't seen any. The Park District didn't comment on what caused the infestation in the first place.

The Fosco Park field house, which features a zero-depth pool with six lanes, opened in summer 2005.
