ANDERSONVILLE — After years on Clark Street, the Famous Fido Rescue and Adoption Alliance is closing up shop in Andersonville and bringing its no kill animal adoption and rescue service to Irving Park.

At the end of December, volunteers and employees cleaned out the shop at 5430 N. Clark St. and moved animals and products to the new location at 3124 W. Irving Park Rd. The service hopes to open in the first two weeks of January, said owner Gloria Lissner.

"There's a big need for this in our community and society. This new building is a new voice for animals," said Lissner.

While rising rent was one of the problems leading up the departure, the new 10,000-square-foot location will allow them more space for animals to live comfortably and more opportunity to educate owners, said Martha Hack, vice rresident of the non-profit.

"The space is part of it and the landlord wanted a lot of money," said Hack.

The new location will have cageless animal rooms for dogs and cats, suites for dogs that don't get along with other dogs, furniture, TV and music, among other perks. But the location won't just be better for pups, it will also be a place to educate owners in the city.

"There will be a lot going on. It'll be different from a lot of the places," said Hack adding the group will focus on ways to help return pets to their owners like ensuring the public knows how to register microchips and tags online, which owners rarely do.

"It's not only a rescue center, but a learning center for the public." said Hack. "It's all about education. We have to educate the public, some people just don't get it."
