Package Thief on the Loose in Lincoln Square, Caught on Video

By Patty Wetli | November 24, 2015 5:37am

LINCOLN SQUARE — Just as deliveries are about to spike during the holiday season, DNAinfo.com has obtained images of a package thief who's been on the loose in Lincoln Square since at least August.

A neighborhood good Samaritan shared photos of the burglar taken in August and just last week, and also provided video from an August heist in which the bandit makes off with not one, not two, not three but four packages from a single porch.

The video footage was filmed in the 5100 block of North Oakley Avenue.

According to the resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, he nearly caught the crook, but the thief wriggled free. The pilfered packages were recovered, bearing addresses from the 2200 block of West Giddings Street, as well as North Leavitt Street between the 4700 and 5100 blocks. Police were called and retrieved the stolen booty.

The tipster told DNAinfo that he's aware of at least three incidents involving the same thief, including a sighting last week.

With package thefts on the rise, the app Doorman was recently made available in Chicago: Packages are sent to a warehouse address provided during merchandise checkout and users then schedule a convenient delivery time.

Readers have also recommended selecting UPS and FedEx options that divert packages to a secure location, though unlike Doorman, this alternative puts the burden of retrieval on the recipient.
