HYDE PARK — The author who literally wrote the book on Hyde Park will share the stories behind some of her favorite historical pictures of the neighborhood on Saturday.

Susan O’Connor Davis will share some of the photos she collected during her research for her book, “Chicago’s Historic Hyde Park,” at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5500 S. Woodlawn Ave.

Davis’ book is hefty and appears as an encyclopedic accounting of nearly every building that does or has existed in the neighborhood, many of the accounts of their construction illustrated with historic photographs.

Included in Davis’ collection are images of long-demolished mansions by the sometimes-bizarre millionaires who lived in Kenwood, the once splendid interiors of churches now abandoned and great feats like the construction of the country’s first Ferris wheel.

The event is sponsored by the Hyde Park Historical Society and the suggested donation of $10 goes toward the groups’ work to preserve the neighborhood’s history.
