5 Ways to Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos in Pilsen

PILSEN — With a skeleton processional and sidewalk altar displays known as ofrendas, Pilsen residents will once again celebrate Dia De Los Muertos in style.

The tradition that honors the deceased begins this weekend in the neighborhood. Here are our top stops in Pilsen.

EleVarte Day of the Dead Processional — Pilsen arts group EleVarte celebrates Dia De Los Muertos with the 36th annual Muertos de la Risa processional Monday. Face painting and musical performances begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Dvorak Park. At 6 p.m., participants in Day of the Dead-inspired costumes can join in on the community processional through Pilsen and Aztec dancers are slated to perform in the park at 7 p.m. Free. Events start at 3:30 p.m., processional at 6 p.m. Monday, 1119 W. Cullerton St., Pilsen

Beautiful Souls Coffin Exhibit After Muertos de Risa Monday, artists will open the 5th annual Beutiful Souls coffin exhibit, which fuses both Day of the Dead and American Halloween traditions with mini ofrendas in the form of coffins. The visual art exhibit will run through Nov. 27. 7-10 p.m. Monday, Cultura in Pilsen, 1900 S. Carpenter St., Pilsen

Carrera de los Muertos Race of the Dead Cheer on 5,000 runners at this sold-out 5K race in University Village and Pilsen, organized the United Neighborhood Organization (UNO). Race starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at south end of Addams/Medill Park

Museum Day of the Dead at Harrison Park The National Museum fo Mexican Art will transform Harrison Park into a festive cemetery, complete with ofrendas, for a citywide Day of the Dead celebration. Guests will also enjoy pan de muerto and hot chocolate, musical performances, face painting and art activities. Free. 4-9 p.m. Sunday, Harrison Park, 1824 S Wood St., Pilsen

La Catrina Dia de los Muertos Kids Event — Chicago Latina Moms will host a kids event with face painting, crafts, storytelling and more at La Catrina Cafe Sunday afternoon. Noon-3 p.m. Sunday, La Catrina Cafe, 1011 W. 18th St., Pilsen.
