LOGAN SQUARE — Planet Fitness is constructing a new workout facility on the site of the former Olympic Carpet building in Logan Square.

The national health club chain, which has more than 1,000 clubs nationwide, plans to open in January in the old building at 2701 N. California Ave. near the intersection of California and Diversey, according to Becky Brown, a company spokeswoman.

The company is raising the existing roof of the former carpet store, according to building permits.

A competing fitness chain, LA Fitness, had expressed plans to open in that location more than a year ago, but it appears those plans fell through.

Planet Fitness will begin pre-sales of memberships in late December for the upcoming Logan Square location.

The company currently has six other Chicago locations, including one in Avondale.

Memberships at the clubs run as low as $10 per month.
