PILSEN — A young man is dead after what police believe was a fall from scaffolding Wednesday night, according to Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Around 7 p.m., police found a man who appeared to have fallen from a scaffolding on the 1600 block of West 17th Street, Zala said.

The white man "in his 20s" was dead on arrival, Zala said, and police are opening a death investigation. The medical examiner's office had not confirmed the death as of 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A witness said that a person had fallen from the scaffolding at St. Adalbert Church at 1650 W. 17th St.

St. Adalbert, a historic church constructed in 1914, is "considered the mother church of the Polish Roman Catholic community of the South and West Sides," according to a GoFundMe page created to raise $3 million to restore its iconic towers about three months ago.

The towers are 185 feet tall and scaffolding was placed to "protect passersby from falling pieces of masonry and brick," according to the page.
