Herb Kent to Get Key to Hyde Park During Summer Concert Series Kickoff

HYDE PARK — Radio host Herb Kent will get the key to Hyde Park before the kickoff of a new concert series at Harper Court on July 29.

Kent will by honored for his more than 70 years in radio by the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce at 7:30 p.m. at Harper Court, 5235 S. Harper Court.

Before Kent gets the key to the neighborhood, Swan will give stepping dance instructions while DJ Calvin Haynes plays music starting at 6 p.m.

Kent will himself take the stage after the ceremony to play his favorite records from 7:40-9 p.m.

The event is the first in a series at Harper Court organized by Eric Williams, owner of the Silver Room, 1506 E. 53rd St.

The series continues from 6-9 p.m. on Aug. 26 with a jazz night with composer Kahil El’Zabar and his band, Denis Winslett on alto saxophone, Junius Paul on bass and Corey Wilkes on trumpet. DJ Duane Powell will also perform.

The series closes with Jose “Papo” Santiago and Bossa Tres for a salsa night from 6-9 p.m. on Sept. 30. Roger Noel will start the evening with a salsa dance lesson at 6 p.m. DJ Kimani Rashaad will also perform.
