LITTLE VILLAGE — La Villita Park in Little Village is offering free movie screenings every Friday through September as part of an anti-violence initiative Mayor Rahm Emanuel rolled out earlier this month.
The movies begin at dusk (roughly 8:30 p.m.) at 2800 S. Sacramento Ave., weather permitting.
First up is "The Boxtrolls" on July 17. The 2014 animated movie follows a young boy who was raised by trash-collecting trolls. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but lost to Big Hero 6, which will play later this summer.
The full schedule includes:
"The Boxtrolls" on July 17
"Cesar Chavez" on July 24
"Big Hero 6" on July 31
"The Mask" on August 7
"La Bamba" on August 14
"McFarland USA" on August 21
"The Perfect Game" on September 4
"Jumanji" on September 11
"October Sky" on September 18
"Selena" on September 25
A spokeswoman with the Chicago Park District noted that the schedule is subject to change.
