Spotify Map Shows Chicago's Distinctive Musical Taste: Homegrown Rap is Big

By Tanveer Ali | July 14, 2015 12:05pm

CHICAGO — Music-streaming service Spotify has unveiled a map showing the distinctive musical tastes of 1,000 cities across the world.

Chicago's playlist is dominated by a handful of homegrown — and in some cases controversial — rappers like King Louie, Lil Durk and Lil Bibby.

The map doesn't just list the most popular songs in each city. Instead it looks at what people are listening to more frequently in a given place compared with the rest of the world.

In other words, it shows what music is most disproportionately beloved in each city. So while New York City's playlist includes songs from the Broadway musical "Fun Home," and Miami's has its share of music with Cuban influences, Chicago's is almost all about local rap.
