WEST LOOP — The CTA is extending four bus routes to popular beaches as part of summer service tweaks, including cutting back on runs serving students while school's out.

"Four times a year, we do what we call our 'picks,' our bus schedule picks," CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase said Tuesday. She called them seasonal "minor service adjustments."

New bus schedules on dozens of routes took effect Sunday, Chase said, "not coincidentally with the start of the CPS summer break."

Primary among the summer shifts are four bus lines running out to beaches: The 63rd Street bus; the 35th Street bus running to 31st Street Beach; the 72 North Avenue bus; and the 78 Montrose Avenue bus. According to Chase, the CTA makes those changes every year.

The CTA is also adding buses and extending service hours on three routes to museums and other popular tourist attractions: the 10 bus to the Museum of Science and Industry, the 124 Navy Pier bus and the 130 bus serving the Museum Campus in Grant Park.

In all, according to Chase, 13 routes are getting increased service and 13 are getting diminished service thanks to the lack of students going to and from school over the summer. Others are simply having their schedules slightly altered.

The CTA put out a list of routes with schedule changes this week and advises riders to check the schedule of individual routes.
