2 Dead, 16 Wounded in Violence Since Saturday Afternoon, Police Say

CHICAGO — Two people are dead, and at least 16 others were wounded, including a 66-year-old man, in violence on the South and West Sides, police said.

In Austin, two men were fatally shot early Sunday morning, and in Pilsen, a 20-year-old man was stabbed during a fight at a party.

That brings the weekend total to 5 people fatally shot, 27 people wounded in shootings since Friday evening.

• Most recently, a 38-year-old man was in fair condition after he was shot in Englewood Sunday morning.

Around 5:04 a.m., the man was sitting in his car in the 5700 block of South Lowe Avenue, when someone fired shots, striking him in his leg, said Officer Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The man drove to the 7900 block of South Wentworth Avenue and alerted police, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center by a friend.

• Several hours earlier, a 20-year-old woman was driving near South Green and 105th streets, in Washington Heights, when shots were fired around 3:45 a.m., Cooper said.

The woman was shot in her wrist and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital by family, where she was listed in good condition.

• Around the same time, a 28-year-old man was shot in his lower back in the 7300 block of South Peoria Street in Englewood at 3:45 a.m. He was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital in fair condition, Cooper said.

The man gave detectives conflicting information and was uncooperative, police said.

• Around 3 a.m., a 19-year-old man walked into Mount Sinai Hospital with a graze wound on his hand. He told investigators he was walking in the 3300 block of West 15th Street in North Lawndale when he heard shots and felt pain. He was listed in good condition, Cooper said.

According to police, the man is a documented gang member.

• At 1:20 a.m. in Roseland, a 47-year-old man was walking in the 11100 block of South Eggleston Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain. The man was shot in his hand, and walked into Roseland Community Hospital where he was listed in good condition, Cooper said.

According to police, the man is a documented gang member.

• A little more than an hour earlier, three people were shot in East Garfield Park.

Around 12:30 a.m., the three were standing outside in the 3600 block of West 5th Avenue when they heard shots and felt pain, Cooper said.

Two men, 21 and 27, were both shot in their legs and taken to John H. Stroger Hospital where their conditions had stabilized. A 17-year-old boy was also shot and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition had stabilized, Cooper said.

According to police, the 27-year-old man is a documented gang member.

• Five minutes after midnight, a 35-year-old man was sitting on his porch in the 8600 block of South Carpenter Street in Auburn Gresham, when he was shot in his leg. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where his condition had stabilized, Cooper said.

• In Burnside around 10:05 p.m., a 17-year-old girl and a 29-year-old man were sitting in a vehicle in an alley in the 900 block of South Drexel Avenue when shots were fired in their direction. The man was shot in his arm and chin, and the teenager was shot in her wrist and forearm. They were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where their conditions had stabilized, Cooper said.

• Around 10 p.m. in Ashburn, a 24-year-old man was standing outside with friends in the 3300 block of West 84th Street when they saw a van approach and fire shots in their direction, Cooper said.

The 24-year-old was shot in his leg and was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital by friends, where he was listed in fair condition, Cooper said.

• An hour earlier, an 18-year-old man and 15-year-old boy were wounded in New City.

Around 9:10 p.m., the man and teenager were walking in the the 1200 block of West 48th Street when a sedan pulled up and someone inside fired shots, Cooper said.

The man was shot in his abdomen and arm, and listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. The teenager was shot in his foot and also taken to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in fair condition, Cooper said.

According to police, both victims are documented gang members.

• In West Garfield Park at 3:45 p.m., a 66-year-old man was in the 400 block of West Wilcox Street, when two unknown men approached from behind and fired shots, striking the man in his stomach and arm. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, Cooper said.

According to police, the shooting appears to be an attempted robbery.
