EAST LAKEVIEW — After a decade of bountiful breakfasts and delicate desserts, the owner of Horizon Cafe is expanding his Broadway Street territory to include a new urban grill.
Nick Cocalis said Horizon Cafe regulars are already eagerly anticipating the late summer opening of Nicky Street Urban Grille, 3801 N. Broadway. Unlike some close-lipped restaurateurs, Cocalis pledged to keep future patrons up to date on new developments through the Nicky Street Facebook and Twitter.
The East Lakeview entrepreneur — whose two restaurants will sit just north of the intersection at Broadway, Halsted and Grace streets — said his restaurant is the "epitome of a small business looking to excel and branch out and get more successful."
Nicky Street will specialize in a "creative spin" on urban street food, particularly smoked meats like beef brisket and chicken wings. The menu also will include sharable plates, burgers, salads and vegetarian options.
Craft beers, signature cocktails and seasonal spiked hot beverages will be featured as well.
The former Z Mart has been under renovation for several months, with work including the installation of a double-sided fireplace and televisions. Cocalis said he hopes to create a cool, cozy neighborhood watering hole, where residents can enjoy trivia or karaoke nights. Patio seating is planned for the summer.
"I think people are rooting for us, because they know who we are, and they know we're very personal and dedicated. We have a vested interest, and we're [at Horizon Cafe] every day," Cocalis said.
